Spain: fall in tile exports during first nine months of 2003

26/02/04 - According to figures announced by the Spanish ceramic tile manufacturers’ association Ascer, the value of exports fell by 7.6% in the first nine months of 2003 over the same period in 2002 to reach 1,454.5 million euro.
The third quarter of the year saw a smaller downturn than the first two quarters (-6% compared to -8.4% in the first quarter and -8.3% in the second).

The European Union remains the main destination area, absorbing 41.5% of total exports. The top markets are France (+6.3%), the UK (+0.2%) and Portugal (in spite of the 15.9% downturn). Germany is showing a recovery with a 3.7% increase in sales. Overall, the downturn in the EU was limited to -1.4% and was compensated by the good performance of exports to Eastern European countries (+5.3%). Russia in particular showed a 7% increase and has further potential for expansion.

In the Americas, the Spanish producers have experienced some difficulties both in North America (-15.8% in the United States, overall the largest foreign market) and in South America (-29%). The same applies to Asia (-17%) and the Middle East (-20%). Exports to Africa also performed strongly (+7.7%).
