Iran, production to reach 2 million square metres in 2005
The Iranian ceramic industries plan to replace 30% of machinery to improve the production process through the adoption of more advanced technology. This is largely due to optimistic forecasts for ceramic tile production: local manufactures forecast production levels of 70,800,000 square metres in 2002, 105,000,000 in 2003, 135,000,000 in 2004 and 200,000,000 in 2005.
According to ICE (Italian Trade Commission), Italian companies are considered highly as partners on the road to technological modernisation of the sector in Iran, amongst other things through bilateral agreements between the two countries. Over the past ten years, Iran has become one of the top 10 manufacturers of ceramic products worldwide, reaching production levels of around 71 million square metres in 2001.
According to the Italian Trade Commission, opportunities offered by the sector provide wide scope for business, also due to the growth in population and driving effect of the construction sector, which over the past few years has increased considerably in urban areas, reaching 28% in 2000 and 31% in 2001.
The aim of expansion involves both an increase in quantity and improvement in quality standards. This should spur on the country to increase its world share of exports, which at present can be estimated at around 10% of articles and ceramics production.
