MagFace: dry tiling with no compromises

MagFace is a patented system for the magnetic dry installation of all types of surface coverings in just one millimetre of thickness, which eliminates all the inconvenience associated with conventional installation.

MagfaceThe MagFace system is an innovative magnetic dry installation solution for floor, wall and surface coverings patented by Bassi Group. Designed to eliminate the use of adhesive, grout and mortar, it makes installation quick, clean and easy, in a thickness of just 1 millimetre.

Invented in Italy on the basis of a visionary idea developed in 2010, MagFace evolved into a patented system in 2015, before being granted a worldwide industrial patent in 2017.

Andrea Bassi, CEO e inventore di MagFace

“When our offices were remodelled in 2010, I realised just how much inconvenience is caused by the process of installing new coverings, with adhesives and debris to dispose of, not to mention all the dust and dirt,” explained Andrea Bassi, CEO of Bassi Group and inventor of the patented system. “That’s what prompted me to start testing out alternative solutions, working assiduously at night and weekends, with a view to creating a magnetic system for the installation of floor, wall and surface coverings without using adhesive, grout or mortar".

Sustainability: the added value of MagFace

Thanks to its patented properties and international certifications that guarantee quality, safety and sustainability, MagFace is the only magnetic dry installation system with a thickness of just 1 millimetre. As its environmental certifications testify, MagFace is VOC-free and free from toxic substances and heavy metals, making it safe and eco-friendly. MagFace is also aligned with 12 of the goals of UN Agenda 2030, promoting reuse, sustainability and the circular economy. Quick and easy to install, the system is certified for both newbuild and renovation projects, without requiring any demolition work, and can be applied to a wide range of surface coverings, including porcelain tile, ceramic, wood, glass, stone, marble, quartz, synthetic materials and resilient materials. With the MagFace system, tilers can install 10 to 20 square metres of coverings per hour, in an entirely dry, adhesive-free process.

Technical features and how it works

The MagFace system is equipped with four installation bases, all of which are made of special ferrous micro-particles: MagFlexMat (insulating matting), MagMixture Paint (water-based paint), MagMixture Plaster (plaster for compensating height differences of up to 5mm) and MagFlexPro (an insulating panel for compensating height differences of up to 10mm). The choice of base to apply depends on the type of substrate and the format of the covering to be used.  The covering material is transformed into a product “by MagFace” by applying a special magnetic layer, just 0.5-0.7mm thick, to the back. Thereafter, it just needs to be placed on its installation base to obtain a permanent magnetic fix.

One of the key features of the MagFace system is that it eliminates the need for joints, thanks to its decoupling base incorporating advanced technology. But if you do you do want grouted joints, you can opt for MagFiller, an odourless, non-toxic, hybrid grout, available in 28 different colours, which absorbs shocks, resists dirt and moisture and is easy to remove. MagFace is suitable for all types of environment, including ISEGA-certified food-preparation and hospital environments.

MagFace’s certifications confirm that it is formaldehyde-free, free from significant magnetic fields (just 0.2 mT, in other words well below safety limits), suitable for Heavy Duty in accordance with the Robinson Test under ASTM C627-10, has impact resistance of >= 55 in accordance with ISO EN 10545-5, has Split Test vertical load resistance of up to 110 kg/m2, and meets the requirements of flame class V-0 (self-extinguishing).

Thanks to the system’s technical features, furthermore, electrical and plumbing systems remain inspectable under any surface covered with MagFace.

Who is MagFace aimed at?

MagFace is specifically designed for manufacturers of floor, wall and surface coverings for use in residential and light commercial environments such as offices, shops, showrooms, hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, as well as trade shows, temporary shops, flagship stores and all spaces that need to be restyled quickly and frequently. It is ideal for anyone looking for easy-to-install covering solutions for use in newbuild projects, renovation work and raised technical flooring.

How do you get hold of MagFace?

Manufacturers interested in using MagFace can sign a territorial licensing agreement giving them the right to use the registered trademark, the patented technology and the system’s ingredients, in order to offer their customers a product “by MagFace” and benefit from its unique features and patented magnetic innovation.
