Italian tile exports: first half of 2003

11/12/03 - The Italian ceramic tile companies exported a total of 216 million square metres of tiles in the first half of 2003, 2.69% less than in the same period in 2002. The corresponding value of 1.952 billion euro was down by 2.83%.
The breakdown of data supplied by Assopiastrelle according to geographical area reveals a fall in sales in EU countries (105 million sq.m or 985 million euro, down by 3.23% and 0.60% respectively, but a 2.73% increase in average selling price). Poor performances were show by Germany (-7.50% by volume), Holland (-18.15%) and Portugal (-27.88%). In the remaining European countries, only Switzerland (+1.27% by volume) and Russia (+4.41%) have returned positive results, while Poland (-23.22%) and Hungary (-13.75%) are in the throes of a major downturn.

Outside Europe, only America is showing an increase, with an 11.29% increase in volume in the United States. The quantities exported to the USA have reached almost 35 million square metres, corresponding to a value of 338 million euro. Nonetheless, there was a sharp fall in average selling prices (-18.75%) resulting in a fall in value of exports (-9.58%).

Asia has shown a fall in volumes (-17.98%) and exported values (-14.51%), but a 4.23% increase in average price. Africa has shown a 7.69% fall in volume and an 8.70% drop in value, while exports to Australia and Oceania are down by 10.48% in volume and 2.58% in value, while the average price has risen by 8.82%.
