Turnovers of Spanish ceramic tile manufacturers (2001)
The Spanish ceramic tile manufacturers' turnovers
According to official figures released by ASCER (Spanish ceramic tile manufacturers' association), 2001 was another record year for the Spanish ceramic tile industry. Production rose to 638 million square metres (2.7% up on 2000) and sales to 644.9 million square metres (+7.7%). This result is due to the positive situation in the domestic market, with sales of 306 million square metres (+6.4%), and expansion in foreign markets (+8.6% to a total of 339 million square metres), albeit smaller than the 15.5% growth recorded in 2000 (Table 1).
Exports accounted for 52.6% of total sales, a similar figure to that of the previous year. With these figures, Spain has overtaken Italy in production and sales, whereas the Italian tile industry retains its lead in terms of value and average price. The Italian ceramic industry's total turnover is 5,283 million euro compared to Spain's 3,472.4 million euro; Italy's average export price is 8.62 euro/sq.m against Spain's 5.87 euro/sq.m.
Exports
Out of a total turnover of 3,472.4 million euro, 1,988 million (42.7%) is generated by exports, which have increased in almost all markets with the exception of a slight fall in the United States (0.6% down on 2000), in Southeast Asia (-3.3%) and in Oceania (-8.3%). Overall foreign turnover increased by 6.2% in 2001 over 2000 and an almost identical growth rate (+6.4%) was recorded for exports during the first four months of 2002 over the same period in the previous year (Table 2). Compared with last year, the first four months of 2002 show a marked recovery in sales in the United States (14.5% up on the first four months of 2001) and in Oceania (+31%), a downturn in South America (-10.1%) and a continuing negative situation in Southeast Asia (-5.4%).
Production
The following are a few of the most interesting aspects concerning Spanish tile production in 2001:
- although falling, wall tile production accounts for 36% of the total compared with Italy's 21.3%; - porcelain tile (through-bodied and glazed) is produced by just over 30 companies with output amounting to about 50 million sq.m/year; in Italy more than 120 companies manufacture porcelain tile to a total of more than 300 million sq.m/year (48.2% of production);
- production of red body tiles accounts for about 80% of the total (24-25% in Italy);
- production of white body tiles is 20% of the total (75-76% in Italy);
- unlike in Italy, there are very few companies that operate with more than one brand name and sales network. Consequently company growth takes place mostly through an increase in internal production rather than through acquisitions.
Following the acquisition of Laufen A.G. in 1998, the Roca Group has become one of the world's largest ceramic tile manufacturers with a production capacity of about 50 million square meters/year.
Tile production is carried out in the following factories:
Spain: two factories (Barcelona and Castellon de la Plana);
Brazil: Incepa;
USA: Laufen Ceramics (2 factories);
Peru: Celima;
Bulgaria: Fayans Kaspichan.
In 2001 the Roca Group's tile division (excluding Celina) generated a turnover of 316.4 million euro.
