Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio acquires 70% stake in Cargo Clay

Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio acquires 70% stake in Cargo Clay15/04/2003 - Just over a year since it entered the freight transport sector, Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio has extended its field of activity with the acquisition of 70% of the capital of Cargo Clay, the company run by Assocargo and controlled by Assopiastrelle which transports clays quarried prevalently in France and Germany.
The operation anticipates greater use of rail transport for raw materials and finished products. The Cargo Clay reference market will not only comprise the 150 or so tile manufacturers in the Sassuolo area but will extend to all 248 Italian companies in the sector, which collectively report a turnover of 5,300 million euro and employ more than 30,000 people.

The company's Chairman is Massimo Stoppini, who is also Administration and Control Director of FNME. He is joined on the board by Marco Morfino, Director of FNME Cargo, and Alberto Spallanzani, Vice Chairman of Assopiastrelle. Francesco Anselmi has been appointed Managing Director.

Alberto Spallanzani commented: "We have provided the sector with a company whose purpose is to improve the entire system of logistics serving the industry. Cargo Clay intends to dialogue with all national players in order to extend the use of the railway in transporting raw materials and finished products in constructive cooperation with the other initiatives already in progress, such as those of FER for transport of clay from Ravenna."

"Our intention," explained Marco Morfino, director of the Cargo division of Ferrovie Nord Milano Esercizio, "is to establish dedicated companies or partnerships in various industrial sectors. Cargo Clay provides an excellent opportunity for the future of our company, particularly in view of the fact that Italy is one of the world leaders in the production of building ceramic."
