Mohawk Group continues growth
This good result was largely due to the strong performance of the ceramic tile manufacturer Dal-Tile and the excellent sales results in the hard surfaces segment (ceramic tiles, carpet, rubber flooring, vinyl, laminates), which is expanding rapidly in the USA.
Dal-Tile sales rose from $317.5 million in the first half of 2002 to the current $597 million. In the second half of 2003, Dal-Tile sales rose by 11% to $320.4 million, compensating for the slight fall in the Mohawk segment, down 1% from $938.6 million in the second half of 2002 to $926.7 in the same period in 2003.
This slight fall was mainly due to a decline in sales of carpet in the residential sector and to the high cost of raw materials in the Mohawk segment.
In the first half of 2003 profits totalled $118.738 million, 1.75% down on the $116.625 million of the same period last year. This fall was caused by a drop in sales and an increase in raw materials and energy costs in the carpet sector. In June Dal-Tile started up production at a new ceramic tile factory as a joint venture with Emilceramica.
