Northcot Brick project wins 2016 RIBA Stirling Prize

Newport Street Gallery (Vauxhall, London) has won the prestigious 2016 RIBA Stirling Prize for the UK’s best new building, awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

A major contribution to the project was made by Northcot Brick, a leading UK brick producer which supplied 198,000 clay bricks in two different colours to match the “common” style brick of the listed building. In addition, 6,000 bespoke handmade and standard machine-made special shapes were manufactured to the architect’s specifications.

Designed by architects Caruso St John, the Newport Street Gallery extends over an area of more than 3,400 square metres. It involved the conversion of three listed buildings which had been purpose-built in 1913 as scenery painting workshops for the theatre industry. Owned by artist and art collector Damien Hirst, the gallery stands out for its highly flexible spaces. The interior consists of a single space that runs the length of the street.
