Saie 2002 opens in BolognaBologna, 17 October 2002 - A product range consisting of 11 major categories and more than 400 product types, 1,850 exhibiting companies including 450 foreign firms, an exhibition space that counts 18 halls and 6 external areas with a total area of 210,000 square metres. These are the key figures for Saie, the International Exhibition of Building Technology that opened yesterday in Bologna. The show will continue until Sunday, drawing thousands of specialist visitors to Bologna. In 2001, Saie registered a total of 160,000 visitors including 6,500 from abroad.
The exhibiting sectors at the 2002 edition cover the entire building industry: Waterproofing and insulation; Exhibition of tools and fixing systems; Roofing and covering systems; Building systems, components and subsystems; Laminated wood structures; Lime, cement, mortar and similar materials; Building site machinery, equipment and technologies; Technical instruments and testing, control and measuring equipment; Water treatment and plumbing; IT systems and Service companies.
Alongside products and services, this year the exhibition also offers an extensive programme of conferences consisting of some 50 events including seminars, workshops, conferences and specialist focus meetings. The "in-depth" section features this year's main events.

The Core Exhibition 2002 at Saie 2002 concludes the theme of "sustainable building" (dealt with over a three-year period) with an analysis of the situation in Europe. The 2002 exhibition presents a series of experiments illustrating the growing influence of the concept of sustainability in building design and construction in Europe. Planned and implemented projects along with experiences of legislation and sustainability in the most important European countries will be presented through a Conference, an Exhibition and a Book. Internationally renowned figures will speak at the Conference held on 18 October in the Palazzo dei Congressi (Italia Room). These include German architect Thomas Herzog (Herzog + Partner), the Italian architect Massimo Pica Ciamarra (Pica Ciamarra Associati) and the British architects Michael Beaven (Arup & Associates Ltd) and Marco Goldschmied (Richard Rogers Partnership).

This year the series of Seminars on topical issues for designers will address: Design cost analysis, Super D.I.A., Costs of transforming buildings: analysis techniques and case histories, Building site safety, Fire prevention. The initiative is conducted in cooperation with www.edilio.it, the BolognaFiere portal devoted to the design sector. It will consist of a series of events held during Saie 2002, followed by condensed versions repeated in 4 Italian cities in November and December (Rome on 14 November, Venice on 28 November, Milan on 5 December and Naples on 12 December).
