North Africa Construction: Libya
Last October, Libya’s Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni announced a massive infrastructure investment programme to be carried out in Tobruk, a port city in the east of the country. Projects include construction of the country’s largest port, an airport, a 1,000 km railway which is already under construction in the south of the country along the border with Egypt and Sudan, 10,000 houses, a 300-bed hospital and a university. The entire project, valued at US $36 million, will be carried out by a consortium of Chinese investors within 3 years.
Minister for Transport Milad Matoog has announced that during the first few months of 2017 an Italian company will begin work on rebuilding Tripoli International Airport (TIA).
Another project concerns the new headquarters of the National Oil Corporation (NOC) in Bengasi, tasked to the Istanbul-based firm of architects 3XKO. Construction work will extend over a 15,000 sq.m site and will consist of 7 buildings, including 4 in the first operational step, constructed in accordance with criteria of sustainability and energy efficiency.
Major projects will also be carried out in the cities of Sirte and Sebha which suffered extensive damage during the war. A specially convened committee meeting last December as part of the Stabilization Facility for Libya (SFL) decided to assign US $10 million to healthcare, education, energy and water sector development in the two cities.
Sirte will receive US $7.6 million, which will be spent on rebuilding the Ibn Sina Hospital, construction of two new schools and the supply of power generators. The southern city of Sebha will receive US $2 million, which will mainly be spent on improving the water supply and new services in the existing hospital.
