Spain secures major growth in exports in 2001A total of 215 manufacturers, 93% concentrated in the area of Castelln, employing 25 thousand and producing 633 million square metres of tiles per year. This is the picture of the Spanish ceramics industry outlined in May at the Coverings fair by Pedro Riaza, general secretary of ASCER, the association of Spanish ceramics manufacturers.
In 2001, sector performance in Spain was more than positive, with an increase of 2% in production and 9% in exports, reaching 339 million square metres; in other words 53% of total sales. Today, Spain concentrates 29% of total exports in ceramic tiles and 16% of production worldwide.
Spanish exports, as Riaza explained, comprise 40% in the European Union and 15% in the NAFTA area, followed by the markets of the Middle East (13%), Eastern Europe (10%) and Latin America, excluding Mexico (8%). The United States, where the Spanish manufacturers cover 15% of imports, represent 11.5% of the country's tile exports.
