Brazil exceeds production of 500 million square metres
According to figures released by Anfacer (Brazilian ceramic tile manufacturers' association), production totalled 508.3 million square metres compared to 473.4 million sq.m in 2001 (growth of 7.4%).
Domestic sales rose by 9.6% from 416.3 million square metres in 2001 to 456.3 million sq.m in 2002, generating a domestic turnover that has risen from 2.25 billion real (US $794.5 million) in 2001 to 2.75 billion real ($971 million) in 2002, an increase of 22.2%.
The news is likewise good for exports, up by 19.6% in quantities and 18.3% in value.
In absolute terms, in 2002 the Brazilian manufacturers exported 55.6 million square metres (compared to 46.5 million sq.m in 2001) to a value of US $205.1 million, substantially higher than the previous year's $173.4 million.
