United Arab Emirates: fall in imports from Italy

26 November 2002 - The first 5 months of 2002 saw a fall in trade between Italy and the United Arab Emirates. According to figures from Istat (Italian Institute of Statistics) elaborated by the ICE (Italian Trade Commission) office in Dubai, imports from Italy fell by 9.25% over 2001 (736 million euro), while exports to Italy fell by 16.3% (51 million euro). The Italian products that are most in demand in the UAE include ceramic tiles, chemical products, machinery and equipment.
Together with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, the UAE is the main outlet market for Italian exports in the Gulf. According to the ICE, in spite of the fall in trade between the two countries, the balance of trade remains in Italy's favour, as it has done for a number of years given that Italy does not import oil from the UAE.
