Agreement for social housing project in Mozambique

The project takes account of Mozambique’s fast-growing population and its high degree of vulnerability to climate change

The Maputo government has signed a public-private partnership agreement with the Chinese company CITIC Construction to build 35,000 social housing units over the next five years in four provinces of Mozambique (15,000 in the south, 10,000 in the centre and 10,000 in the north of the country).

The agreement was announced by the minister for Public works, housing and water resources Joao Machatine, stressing the need for social housing programmes catering for the population in the urban areas of the country.

The project takes account of Mozambique’s fast-growing population and its high degree of vulnerability to climate change. The agreement also covers construction of ancillary infrastructure including connecting roads, street lighting and electricity and water supplies.
