The Brazilian tile industry notches up a good 2003

24/02/04 - In recent years the Brazilian tile industry has become one of the most important in the world. Brazil is the world’s fourth largest producer of ceramic tiles with a year 2002 production of 508.3 million square metres (8.6% of the world total), equivalent to a total turnover of US $2.2 billion.
It also ranks second amongst tile consumer countries after China with 436 million square metres.
According to preliminary end-of-year figures supplied by Anfacer, 2003 saw a 4.9% increase in production to 533.7 million square metres, while domestic sales reached about 470 million square metres.

Brazil is also the fourth largest exporter country with exports of 73.9 million square metres in 2002. According to Anfacer preliminary end-of-year figures, 2003 was also a good year for exports, with quantities expected to increase by 27% to 94.1 million square metres. The increase in terms of value will be 22.3% from US $205 million in 2002 to $250.7 million. These figures are confirmed by export data for the first half of 2003, which show 20% growth over the same period in 2002.

Brazil’s major export markets include the United States (the world’s largest ceramic tile importer), which accounts for 22.7% of total exports, South Africa and Canada.
