European Commission launches proposal for country of origin labelling

09/01/06 - On 16 December the European Commission launched a proposal for compulsory country of origin labelling as requested by the Italian ceramic tile industry to enable it to fight unfair competition.

This decision will be ratified and the rules of application approved at the forthcoming Council of European Ministers to be held in January.
The importance of labelling is demonstrated by the rapidly increasing import figures. Italy alone imports just under 9 million square metres of tiles originating from non-EU countries, while the EU as a whole imports almost 100 million sq.m (8.53% of total sales).
